Aslan ex machina...

It's not very good for an action movie if the hero is comatose during the finale, I think.

True, but the action is there, especially when Re Riccardo shows up and goes after Principe Giovanni.

Disney back in the 1960s and early 1970 was pretty horrible overall. Robin Hood was watchable, but could have been a lot better. Disney then had a strange fixation on sticking current American pop-culture into everything, which is why you ended up with things like Pat Buttram as the sheriff and Roger Miller as a singing rooster. Their quality and general standards probably hit an all-time low with The Sword in the Stone, with Merlin wearing Hawaiian shirts and talking like a hippie.

Everything went south after Walt died, I guess. Things improved eventually, but that had to be their worst period,

...just for the record, Robin Hood and The Sword in The Stone happens to be two of my favorite Disney movies, so... yeah, thanks man

indeed - that would have been a far more interesting end

actually, one of the older stories of robin hood speaks of him ultimately dying in a small nunery where he had come to drain some blood (back then getting leech'd was considered good medicine) but the nuns were on the evil sherif's take, and bled him dry.

for a moment i thought this alternate end would play to that - still, its a nice alternate ending

and little john as the duke of essex? lol

I guess my problem was that, while Hanna Barbera for instance, never had a history of quality animation (and made some TRULY horrible movies), Disney knew what quality was and abandoned it to the degree they did. Looking at what they did in the 1940's and 50's the difference is pretty clear.

Robin Hood did give us one positive thing - all those alternate endings other people keep dreaming up. This one for instance:

I know I have more of that one here someplace...

And Sword in the Stone is my fave Disney movie ever. Not that I'm ragging on Rafe or anything, I can tell that Disney were....going through some difficult motions, shall we say, at that time, I mean Walt had died, Reitherman was trying to direct, it must have been a shaky time. But they got better after a while of course.

I prefer the version in the film, it's more... actiony. :P

And shame on you Rafe! This is Disney, not Ralph Bakshi...

If memory serves. Isn't that how the version of Robin Hood starring Sean Connery ended?
